THE STORY:

I recently went through some older images to update and submit to a juried photography contest.

This photograph was captured during a period my family lived in Ellensburg, Washington.

I had photographed by this old abandoned gas station multiple times before getting lighting and composition I wanted.

HISTORY:

If you’re heading south out of Ellensburg on State Route 821 towards the Yakima River Canyon, you pass through the area known as Thrall.

I haven’t been able to find that much information about this old gas station, or even about the area known a Thrall, Washington. I can only speculate.

Thrall was probably a stop for the railroad as it transversed the canyon between Ellensburg and Yakima. Later, once a motor vehicle road was established, this old gas station was probably the first option for fuel or service in 21-miles since leaving Selah, Washington.

When I-82 was completed in 1971, much of the previous traffic now bypassed the route through the canyon. I’m sure this was the beginning of the demise and eventual closing of this old gas station.

It’s been years since I visited the area, and I don’t even know if this building still exists. If anybody has further information about this old gas station, please leave comments below.
