I captured this photograph of Mount Shuksan reflecting into Picture Lake on my first visit to the Mount Baker area. After a morning hike, I drove up to the Mount Baker Ski Area with the intent to photograph this image and then continue up to Artist Point for the sunset.
After checking out a few different potential angles, I settled on this location on the edge of the shoreline of Picture Lake. Next came the composition of the scene. My desire was to have multiple layers of elements within the photograph, starting with the grass in the water, onto the reflection of the landscape, then the alpine forest and finally Mount Shuksan.
The timing was important with this composition as well. An ill-timed capture would have resulted in a passing vehicle along the road that is hidden on the far left side of the image. Not only did I have to consider the vehicular traffic (luckily it was a weekday), due to the nature of things, there was a slight breeze during the majority of the ninety minutes that I was relaxing on the shoreline of this picturesque lake. When the breeze would stop, I would go to work capturing images. This specific capture was my favorite of the afternoon.
This photograph is one of a series of images from my black and white landscape photography project titled Mount Shuksan, Washington, 2015
