Standing on the Sourdough Ridge trail, I am enveloped in a fog-filled world. The cool late summer air, heavy with moisture, transforms the landscape of Mount Rainier National Park into a realm of ethereal beauty. This place is more than just a location for my black-and-white photography; it’s my sanctuary, where my art can breathe and speak.

The rocks before me are ancient and wise, their rugged surfaces telling tales of time immemorial. They rise from the earth, stark against the softness of the fog that swirls around them. At this moment, I witness a dance between the tangible and the intangible, the solid earth and the shifting mist.

In the absence of color, my world becomes a spectrum of shadows and highlights. The monochrome tones are not just a visual language but a conduit of emotion, each gradient a word, each contrast a sentence. My camera is not just a tool but a pen; I write a narrative of mood and feeling with it. The image I capture is not just a picture but a visual whisper that invites the viewer to look deeper and feel the alpine wilderness’s quietude.

This photograph, ‘Foggy Alpine Landscapes No. 1,’ is more than just an image. It reflects my soul, a piece of me that I share with the world. It’s an offering of the peace I find in these mountains, a peace echoed in the fog that envelops the scene. The fog is like a veil, hinting at the mysteries beyond our sight, inviting the imagination to soar.

I am not merely a chronicler of light but a relentless seeker of the hidden corners of the Pacific Northwest. Through my lens, I don’t just observe the nuances of nature but become one with them, capturing the dance of light upon the land. In this foggy alpine landscape, I find a vast and beautiful canvas and a mirror that reflects the sublime splendor of the Pacific Northwest. Here, in the silence of the fog, I don’t just feel at home, but I am home.

This image is part of my black and white landscape photography project “Foggy Alpine Landscapes, Mt Rainier National Park, Washington.”
