Nestled in the stunning Cascade Mountains of Washington state, the Naches Peak Loop Trail near Chinook Pass offers a picturesque and rewarding hiking experience.

With its breathtaking views of Mount Rainier and the surrounding peaks and diverse flora and fauna, this easy trail is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels.

On a late summer morning, on a day I was going to work late, I spent the night at Chinook Pass to embark on the Naches Peak Loop Trail at first light. There’s nothing quite like starting your day with a hike.

On this particular Wednesday morning, I would have the trails to myself for some time.

I climbed up the trail from the parking lot on the east side of Chinook Pass and crossed State Route 410 via the historic log bridge.

As I began to circumnavigate the Naches Peak Loop Trail in a clockwise direction, the sun had risen over the surrounding peaks, highlighting the alpine forest surrounding me. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement as I gazed at the rugged terrain ahead.

The first section of the trail traverses a steep hillside on the northern flank of Naches Peak, but the stunning views of the surrounding wilderness made the slight climb well worth it.

As I reached a gentle slope, I was treated to the sight of a small, lush valley that, earlier in the season, would be teeming with wildflowers.

As the loop wrapped around the east side of Naches Peak, I arrived at a stunning viewpoint looking down to Dewey Lake, surrounded by mountains. At this point, I ran into the first hikers of the morning.

After the Dewey Lake viewpoint, the Pacific Crest Trail converged with the Naches Peak Loop trail. I followed the trail southern side of Naches Peak, leading through alpine meadows, past seasonal ponds, and stunning views of Mount Rainier. I was in heaven with my camera. I found myself frequently stopping to capture the beauty of the landscape.

As I returned to the parking lot, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the incredible experience that the Naches Peak Loop Trail had offered. The stunning views, diverse flora and fauna, and refreshing mountain air left me feeling invigorated and inspired.

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a beginner looking for a new adventure, the Naches Loop Trail is a must-visit destination that will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
