From our late night at Cape Flattery, we (my daughter, her roommate, and myself) started our trip east. Along the way to our next destination, we visited the Lake Crescent Lodge, where we had coffee with a view.
When we arrived at the Hurricane Ridge Visitors Center, it was late afternoon. We ate dinner, visited the gift shop, and then took in the views from the beautiful vantage point. The conditions for photographs from this spot weren’t ideal. The sun was backlighting the mountains to the west, washing out potential photos.
Close to the parking lot to Hurricane Ridge is a road out to Obstruction Point. The original construction plan was to loop this road to Deer Park. In the end, the terrain prevented that, dead-ending eight miles out.
The road to Obstruction Point is a narrow gravel, often perched above a drop to the valley below. It is not a route for the faint of heart if you’re not experienced in driving these types of roads.
We spent the evening along the road, taking in the beautiful sights of the mountains. We even had some close-up encounters with the local deer population.
The views of the Olympic Mountains are worth the drive to the end. The location provides a different perspective than that from Hurricane Ridge, and it offers scenery most visitors to Olympic National Park will never see.
Below, I’m sharing a few YouTube videos from the day I shot on my iPhone.
