I have always been fascinated by black and white photography and how it can reveal the beauty and drama of a scene without the distraction of colors. That’s why, when I visited Belgium last December, I decided to challenge myself and capture its stunning architecture and culture using my iPhone in monochrome mode.
I was accompanied by my wife, who was eager to see our daughter, who is studying at a university in Brussels. We spent most of our time in the capital city, exploring its historic landmarks, such as the Grand Place and the Royal Palace. I was amazed by the contrast and texture of the buildings and how they reflected the light and shadow in different ways. I used different angles and perspectives to create exciting compositions and convey a sense of depth and scale.
One of the highlights of our trip was a day excursion to Ghent. This medieval city boasts a rich cultural and artistic heritage. We walked along the canals, admiring the old houses and bridges. I was especially drawn to the details and patterns of Gothic and Baroque architecture and how they created a harmonious and elegant aesthetic.
Throughout my black and white photography project, I learned a lot about the art and technique of monochrome photography. I discovered how to use tonal contrast, light, and shadow to create mood and emotion and how to select subjects that have solid shapes and forms. I also realized that shooting in black and white requires a different mindset and vision than shooting in color. It can be a rewarding and creative experience.
I hope you enjoy my black and white photos of Belgium and that they inspire you to see the world in a new way.
