Douglas County, in Central Washington State, is home to many old farmhouses and barns that have been abandoned and left to decay. These structures are the relics of a bygone era when small-scale farming was the backbone of the rural economy. The farmers who lived and worked on these lands endured the extreme weather conditions of hot summers and cold winters.

In this photography project, you will see a variety of rural buildings, from humble wooden cottages to elegant brick houses, as well as the barns and windmills that served their needs. As the agricultural industry shifted to larger and more efficient farms, many small farmers sold their properties and moved away, leaving behind empty and neglected houses and barns.

Fortunately, these historic buildings have not been demolished or replaced, but rather preserved by the natural forces that slowly reclaim them.
