This photograph features Round Island, a small but captivating island nestled in the heart of Willapa Bay, Washington. If you’ve ever driven along Highway 101 on the southern coast, you might have caught a glimpse of this charming piece of nature. I’ve passed by this island numerous times, each time hoping to capture its essence through my lens. It took a bit of patience and multiple attempts, but I finally succeeded. Let me tell you how it all came together.
One recent sunny day, returning home from Astoria, Oregon, I glanced out at the bay and saw Round Island bathed in golden sunlight. The sky above was clear, adorned with fluffy clouds that added character to the scene. The bay’s waters were remarkably calm, with gentle ripples reflecting the sky’s hues. It was as if nature had conspired to grant me the perfect moment to capture this island’s beauty.
With my camera in hand, I decided to stop and seize this opportunity. The island’s allure lay in simplicity, so I developed the photograph in classic black and white.
