I love exploring the Washington coast, especially in winter. The rainy weather makes everything feel so dramatic! Recently, I went out exploring along the coast between Aberdeen and Westport. I hoped for an incredible sunset but ended up with something even better for black and white photography – thick gray clouds!

At the end of the day, I ended up at South Jetty Beach in Westhaven State Park. The rocks of the jetty, the crashing waves, and the vast, empty beach looked perfect in shades of black and white. I tried out lots of different angles and made a bunch of images. The ones I’m sharing here are my favorites from that chilly evening.

The most remarkable thing happened while taking photos – I saw a whale! It breached out of the water, not far from the jetty. Even though I wasn’t ready to photograph it, the whale sighting was still the best part of the day.

Right as it started getting really dark, the rain came pouring down. I had to pack up and head home, but I still had my awesome photos (and the memory of the whale!).

Why Black and White Photography?

Sometimes, getting cool, cloudy weather is good for photography! Colors can get washed out in the flat light, but black and white photos focus on the fantastic shapes, textures, and the overall mood of a scene.
